Today, Silambam is often referred to as Porkalai, meaning martial or warrior art. In ancient times, however, it was known as Porthōzhil. In Tamil, Por means war and Thōzhil means work or discipline—indicating that it was not merely combat, but a way of life and a dedicated profession.

Terminology may change over time, but true power never changes. At the same time, the beauty of the art must be revealed. It is called an art because it must be performed with grace, precision, and aesthetic harmony.

Power and beauty are like the two sides of a coin—both are essential and inseparable. As this is our tradition, we must be deeply conscious of maintaining both aspects in our practice.

There is no need to proclaim our art through words. People should understand its depth, discipline, and power through our body language, our actions, and our performance. Our practice itself must speak—showing who we are and how powerful the art truly is…
